I Think, Therefore IM

I use internet-messaging shorthand daily with my friends on my mobile phone. I don't use it on the Internet (or when I'm using a computer in general), or in writing, casual or formal. I think the reason is because I learned writing styles in very special situations: I learned formal writing in high school and university; I learned about computers and the Internet at past jobs; and I learned texting on my mobile socially. I do not "mix genres" when communicating with other people.
  1. The title of Jennifer Lee's article, "I Think, Therefore IM," is based on an expression, what we call a play on words. Do you know what the original expression is, and its author?
  2. What is a lingua franca?
  3. Is there an Internet version of your language?
  4. What does tsk-tsked mean?
  5. In the article, one of the author's interviewees shared that one of her students used instant-messaging shorthand to write quickly to finish a mid-term exam. It it a reasonable action? What is the danger in doing this?

  1. 1. I do not know that original expression of play an words. I guess it may be called wordplay?
    2. According to the Wikipedia, a lingua franca is a language systematically used to make communication possible between people not sharing a mother tongue, in particular when it is a third language, distinct from both mother tongues.
    3. There are a lot of internet-messaging shorthand in Korean. I often do not understand when Korean teenagers use instant-messaging shorthand on the internet.
    4. The meaning of the tsk-tsked is to express disapproval of someone or something by or as if by uttering tsk
    5. I do not think that it is reasonable action on a mid-term exam because academic writing should be formal and strict in terms of words, sentences, grammar, and expressions. If the student keep doing this, he will probably get involved in trouble with his social life.
