- The title of Jennifer Lee's article, "I Think, Therefore IM," is based on an expression, what we call a play on words. Do you know what the original expression is, and its author?
- What is a lingua franca?
- Is there an Internet version of your language?
- What does tsk-tsked mean?
- In the article, one of the author's interviewees shared that one of her students used instant-messaging shorthand to write quickly to finish a mid-term exam. It it a reasonable action? What is the danger in doing this?

I Think, Therefore IM
I use internet-messaging shorthand daily with my friends on my mobile phone. I don't use it on the Internet (or when I'm using a computer in general), or in writing, casual or formal. I think the reason is because I learned writing styles in very special situations: I learned formal writing in high school and university; I learned about computers and the Internet at past jobs; and I learned texting on my mobile socially. I do not "mix genres" when communicating with other people.
